Heritage Open Days 2024 - Advertising communication through the ages, from travel to telephones

  • The Richard Roberts Archive 14 Adswood Rd England, SK3 8LF United Kingdom (map)

Welcome, Heritage Open Days explorers!

Witness the evolution of advertising artistry as you explore vibrant illustrations, striking typography, and ingenious copywriting from our vast vintage advertising archive. Within our walls, you'll find a treasure trove of vintage advertisements spanning diverse industries, from the glamorous world of fashion and luxury goods to the thrilling realms of motoring and aviation. Each piece in our advertisement archive is a time capsule, preserving the zeitgeist of its era and offering a glimpse into the social, cultural, and economic forces that shaped advertising narratives.

Our Heritage Open Day event will focus on the role of print advertising in promoting means of communication from the very earliest days…from horse-drawn carriage to supersonic jet, wired and wireless telegraph communication to internet messaging, and personal and commercial post. We shall be giving a talk showcasing examples from our vast archive of printed advertising.

There will be two chances to hear this fascinating talk: 11.30 & 15.00.

Our trustee team will be on hand with guided tours of the archive every 15 minutes, and to chat about our exciting volunteer opportunities. We will have our usual popup cafe and, this year, there will also be a sale of duplicate advertising pieces from our archive - so come on down to bag yourself a unique item of advertising history!

Open 1000 - 1630 (last admission 1600).
