Research Roundup (May 2021)

In April I received a request from regular researcher Tom Clarke trying to find a 1930’s Gurney Nutting car advert published in India. On searching the collection database I found we had 13 items from India but unfortunately none of them contained the adverts asked for. It just goes to show we don’t always succeed in helping researchers.

One of the things I want the archive to offer is a global representation of advertising and I am always on the lookout for foreign material. If any of you come across such items I would love to hear about them and maybe add them to the archive.

In-house, Peter Moss has used the archive to research the Fiat Balilla car for an article he is writing for the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain’s quarterly magazine “The SAHB Times”. We are fortunate in that we have a regular slot in this publication called “Tales from the Archive” and it is a great showcase for us.

If you have a research request, please do get in touch. Our research team will be glad to help you in searching for high-quality advertising whether it is for use in a publication or just for the sheer pleasure of researching a favourite product or brand.

Richard A Roberts.

Richard is a mechanical engineer and former information technology project manager who first became interested in advertising of all kinds in the early 2000s.

His interest turned to a passion that has led to his founding of the Richard Roberts Archive – an important collection of magazines and their advertisements from the early years of the nineteenth century to the present day. The archive has been converted from Richard’s private collection to a publicly accessible research centre.

He is a director of the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain and is its archive consultant. He has owned several Rolls-Royce Silver Shadows and a rare 1956 James Young Silver Cloud saloon.
