Latest Acquisitions (July 2021)

‘Motor ’ 1920s to 1940s and a bound run of ‘Motor Owner

We have had a bumper month this month as not only have we taken receipt of new acquisitions, but we have also taken delivery of the 22 bound volumes of “Motor” magazine from the 1920s to 1940s (most with covers and adverts) and the bound run of “Motor Owner”.

Lotus Car Club Magazine Archive

I have also been out to collect a large batch of the Lotus Car Club magazines from Peter Waterfield in Bramhall. Peter had listed them on eBay, and we bought them for the archive but when I turned up to collect them and got chatting to Peter about what we are doing he very kindly donated them to the archive promising to send along future copies as well once he has read them. I look forward to showing Peter around the archive when he gets a chance to visit and we look forward to housing the entire physical archive of Lotus Car Club magazines over the coming years.

We need volunteers to help us to scan and catalogue this collection. Please get in touch if you are interested in helping us to preserve this owners club collection. Pictures to follow!

Penrose Pictorial Annual: The Process Yearbook for 1921, ed. by William Gamble (Penrose, 1921) pages: 130+

Alongside these fabulous items, we have also found a 1921 copy of the Penrose Annual (one of the 3 we were missing from a complete run). All we need now are volumes 1 and 2, 1895 and 1896.

‘Omnia’ French motoring magazine 1920s-1930s including special ‘Salon’ editions

To extend our foreign collection we have added a significant number of the French Automotive magazine “Omnia” many of which are the “Salon” editions containing fabulous adverts and articles.

Volunteers needed. Apply now.

This leads me on to our big ask… do you have a few hours spare to help us to work through the backlog of items awaiting cataloging? We want to offer an online advertising finding service where visitors can request specific publications or specific brands and we can not do this without your help…many hands make light work as they say!

We will also need people to help us with the open days which are coming in September 2021. If you are interested in being on our events and PR team please get in contact now.

Contact me through the form at the bottom of this page if you can help for any length of time or with anything we do.

Thanks to all,

Richard Roberts

Richard A Roberts.

Richard is a mechanical engineer and former information technology project manager who first became interested in advertising of all kinds in the early 2000s.

His interest turned to a passion that has led to his founding of the Richard Roberts Archive – an important collection of magazines and their advertisements from the early years of the nineteenth century to the present day. The archive has been converted from Richard’s private collection to a publicly accessible research centre.

He is a director of the Society of Automotive Historians in Britain and is its archive consultant. He has owned several Rolls-Royce Silver Shadows and a rare 1956 James Young Silver Cloud saloon.
